Compile problems

I like some of Simon Tatham's puzzles. At the moment, I'm using the windows binaries under Wine, but that seems a bit silly when Linux versions are available, so I set about getting that working. I have Ubuntu, which seems to have Gnome, so that's a good start. I download the tarball into a directory, there's a Makefile, so I open a shell there and type "make". Several screenfulls of errors ensue, all the ones I can see relate to things in 'gtk.c' that it can't find. Questions: I'm used to doing: ./configure make make install but in this case there's no file called ./configure is that normal? I wanted to see the first error that came out of make, but it scrolls off the screen. Why does "make | more" not pause it for me? "less" doesn't work either. Is it something to do with it being stderr? Any idea why it won't compile? Am I starting on the road to dependency hell?
