Ah yes, the clue is probably in there; it says "providing I have the GTK toolkit 
to compile against". Probably I haven't. But what's it called? In the Synaptic 
package manager, there are 79 things beginning with  "GTK" and 138 things 
beginning with "Gnome". Most of them are clearly irrelevant, but which is the 
one I need? The one that sounds most likely is called "Gnome-System-Tools" but I 
already have that one, as well as a sprinkling of others...

Thanks for the tip on redirecting stderr, I think it's only going to confirm 
that I need this GTK toolkit thing.
