Re: DNS and CL&F

I had to manage about 35 domains for a Department, and those were mostly
under .gc.ca. I also had the chance to read about those, from CIRA
themselves, and in short, .gc.ca is managed just as .ca, or .on.ca or
any other province. It is actually considered at the same level as other
country-based TLDs, For .gc.ca, you need to be a government employee
with an email address from the government, and you also have to provide
a lot of information about the purpose of the domain name, beyond just
contacts names. There is no cost as such for the domain registration,
and there is no expiry as for a regular .ca domain.

Once the registration is complete with all the information, you are
ready to go. Usually, they are asking that the DNS servers are ready
before enabling the name. 

So the .gc.ca domain names are not available for the general public, as
the .on.ca or .qc.ca. Note that .qc.ca (Quebec) has been frozen, in that
you can no more register a .qc.ca domain anymore. However, if you own
one, you're safe. This decision was taken few months ago, as the number
of .qc.ca domain names registrations was too low. Also, if you register,
say, a .ca domain like messier.ca, you also control the .qc.ca and
.on.ca domains. Those are not registered, but if someone else wants to
register messier.ab.ca for example, they first need to ask you. We
wanted to register justice.ca but could not, as justice.on.ca was
already registered, and the owner was asking for "big bucks" before
releasing the .ca name. We had to give up on this.
