As for the other parts of your message -- yes, Google has (in all areas)
turned into utter and complete crap.

Whether it be their handling of Android, or the way that they show
complete and utter incompetence at everything they attempt.. they're on a
long road downwards.

As for your search options?

Well, until very recently, quotes worked best I found.  That is:

I "really" "want" "this"

That prevents their inane pattern matching, which is a far cry from
Google of old.  I honestly preferred it when I searched for the word
'thing', and 'things' didn't show up ONCE as a result.  Their prior
'exact match by default' methodology was far preferred.

Hell, just recently, I searched for something, and I ended with results
in l33t speak!  What the?!  I ended up with something like 'speak',
showing results for 'sp3ak'.

Insane!

I do find that if I want search results to actually match, I do need to
use + in front of almost everything as well.

Everyone is looking for an alternative.  That fowl website might be the
answer, but I doubt it, merely because it's already searching Google for
results!  

I hate M$ more than yellow peas, and that's saying a lot, but even I did
try to switch to them.

Somehow, though, they managed to suck worse than Google.
