Pausing/unpausing process when system is idle

I'm running a GPU distributed computing program, but Xorg lags very
badly when it is running. What I'd like to do is have the GPU program
pause when I'm using the computer, and unpause when the desktop locks
itself because I'm not using the computer. The running client can easily
be paused & unpaused, but what I need to find out is how to have the
computer trigger this behaviour automatically when it locks and unlocks
the desktop. I'm running Linux Mint 14 (Nadia) with the Cinnamon GUI. Is
there a way to have the computer run an arbitrary command when it's
locking & unlocking the desktop?
