I've been travelling the entire last few months, and was surprised to
see Linux having a really big footprint in the South Asian market. I
saw a number of pamphlets with lines like:

"Linux Ubuntu 8.10"

And those were not ads for some local brand or patched-up systems, but
rather that of Dell.

I think vendors themselves actually advise distributors on this,
because Linux would be most needed in developing countries where
piracy is rampant. In a country like ours, where more people can and
will buy original, it doesn't make sense to them to offer Linux as
part of a product, since they don't know what Free Software means
other than "free".
