Yes, Sir Greg, archival data storage is a SERIOUS problem. I have also
encountered the degradation of CDs and DVDs. I lost some really
important stuff (Zappa bootleg concerts etc) that way. The question is
what is the answer? Few are found. One is to use nitride coated "stone
disks", Dye disks do not keep well. I bought some nitride but jury is
still out an lifetime. Years ago I tried just storing data on new hard
drives. It was a fail. What happened was although they were brand new
disks just sitting on a shelf something happened to the bearings and
eventually they would no longer spin up. So I try to periodically spin
them up to keep bearings loose. However, my experience with modern hard
drives is they don't seem to have the bearing problems anymore. So
currently all data is backed up on my server with Raid which I operate
periodically be not continuously so I minimize the miles on the disks.

For TV stuff which takes beaucoup room, I save it on my media server
which is not raid to maximize space, and then store less important
things on these nifty USB external drives. Today you can buy about 4 T
for a little over a hundred bucks. I got stacks of them and do try to
spin them all periodically to keep them loose just for drill, but as I
said I've seen no bearing problems like the old disks.

Sorry, Sir Greg, but in this Newsgroup achievement is no measure of
competence. "Old and Senile" is ONLY determined by the opinions of Nads
and "kensi".

Oh she has interest in your body. She desperately desires to possess
your manly physique not to mention your cute male fashion styles. Men's
clothes just don't look as good on her as they do on you!

You obviously don't understand this newsgroup and it's denizens, Sir
Greg. They are LIBS! Cripes! They haven't a clue what numbers ARE let
alone being able to remember them in order.

For a fair test for the libs here like "kensi" and Nads, the test must
be modified for liberals (Yes I understand experimental psychology too)
where you ask them to recall 5 of their best lies in order and then work
your way upward. I have little doubt that they could easily work their
way up to 50 or 100 lies. When you are a liar, it is of utmost
importance to keep all lies straight in your mind so you don't get
caught in one. It's the ONE thing libs are good at.

Hey Sir Greg, don't you understand how dangerous filling you brain with
government bureaucrat garbage is? That can easily overload all synapses
and blow a few plasma relays turning you into a drooling liberal. The
horror! See "kensi" and Nads for examples of this medical condition.
