He was not listed among the Carver High faculty in the 1976 yearbook because he did not work at Carver High.

As a Visiting Writer, he VISITED various high schools with a large African-American student body.  
*If* one accepts the suspiciously typed, unsigned letter in your school magazine as proof, he was a VISITING WRITER at Carver High that year.

Just because your dumbassed teacher introduced him by a variation of his title at Tulane, doesn't mean that the title applied to Carver.
If Dan Barf had introduced him as Professor Zu-Bolten, that wouldn't mean that he was a professor at Carver.  Poet-in-Residence is a title, just like Doctor or Professor.
If Dan Barf had introduced Dr. Brown from the Columbus Hospital to your class, it wouldn't mean that he was the Carver High school doctor.

The FACTS are that he was employed by ("in residence") at the University of Missouri and Tulane University.  He was a UNIVERSITY professor, NOT a high school teacher.

He VISITED your school, and (maybe) wrote a letter for your school magazine.
