Psalm 16: Make God Your Portion

Discover why you must make God your portion through the preserving 
power, eternal inheritance, and resurrection hope found in Jesus Christ.

Where do you look when life feels unstable, uncertain, or empty? Most 
people spend their lives chasing security in bank accounts, satisfaction 
in career success, or comfort in human relationships, only to find those 
things fragile and fleeting. Scripture calls you to a foundation that 
can never be shaken. Instead of running after the empty promises of this 
world, you should make God your portion.

Because He preserves you (v. 1).

David begins the psalm with the petition, "Preserve me, O God, for in 
you I take refuge," declaring God to be his immediate protector and 
refuge against every earthly threat. For the Church Age believer, this 
preservation finds its fulfillment in Christ, who guards the life hidden 
with Him in God, keeps His saints from final falling, and serves as an 
impenetrable defense against spiritual condemnation and every adversary 
of the soul.

Because He provides all good (v. 2-4).

The text confesses, "You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you," 
while warning that "the sorrows of those who run after another god shall 
multiply," proving that true blessing belongs only to the Lord while 
idolatry yields only compounding grief. For the believer today, Christ 
stands as the sole source of every spiritual blessing and righteous 
standing before God; pursuing the empty idols of this world—materialism, 
self-sufficiency, or worldly applause—yields only sorrow, while union 
with Christ alone imparts true and lasting satisfaction.

Because He secures your inheritance (v. 5-6).

David proclaims, "The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my 
lot," rejoicing that "the lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; 
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance" assigned by God Himself. In the 
same way, the Christian possesses Christ as an eternal portion, making 
every believer a joint-heir to an incorruptible, undefiled inheritance 
reserved in heaven that no power can diminish, alter, or take away.

Because He counsels your heart (v. 7-8).

The psalmist blesses the Lord who gives counsel and notes that "in the 
night also my heart instructs me," declaring that having the Lord at his 
right hand ensures "I shall not be moved." For the Church Age saint, 
Christ provides this constant, unshakeable guidance through His Word and 
indwelling Holy Spirit, directing the mind and conscience through life's 
darkest hours and anchoring the believer in steadfast peace against 
every trial and temptation.

Because He conquers death forever (v. 9-11).

The psalm reaches its triumphant climax with the promise that God will 
not abandon the soul to Sheol nor let His holy one see corruption, but 
will instead make known "the path of life" where in His presence there 
is "fullness of joy" and at His right hand "pleasures forevermore." This 
prophetic passage finds its ultimate realization in the physical 
resurrection of Jesus Christ, whose victory over the grave guarantees 
the bodily resurrection of His church, leading every believer along the 
path of life into unending joy and eternal glory at the Father's right hand.

Invitation

The promise of Psalm 16 is fulfilled at the cross and the empty tomb. 
Every human being has turned away from God, seeking false portions in 
sin and earning the judgment of eternal death. Yet God demonstrated His 
love by sending Jesus Christ to bear our sins in His own body on the 
cross, enduring the penalty we deserved. On the third day, God did not 
abandon Him to corruption, but raised Him bodily from the dead, 
conquering death forever and opening the path of life. You are called 
today to turn from the empty idols of this world, repent of your sins, 
and place your complete faith in the risen Savior. Make Christ your 
portion today, and receive forgiveness, eternal life, and fullness of 
joy in His presence forever.

Through the cross, Christ erased the spiritual debt we owed to God for 
our rebellion (Colossians 2:14), a reality established when God raised
