I use a moderately good mill, grind as coarse as possible and then sift
using a fine mesh strainer and bowl. About half the coffee goes through
the strainer. I keep that part for making single cup pour over coffee
when I'm too lazy to do what I describe here.

What stays in the strainer is uniformly large pieces and doesn't cause
junk in the cup. I put it in an insulated stainless steel 1.5 l press
and add almost boiling water to the half way mark. I stir that for a bit
to get every bit of coffee wet and then add the rest of the water.

"Alexa, give me a timer for 4 minutes." Press. Serve.

Works for me.
