Mesh technologies don't work except in contrived geographies. It all 
comes down to the fact that radio signals with frequencies higher than 
30 MHz or so don't bounce off the ionosphere. That means they are line 
of sight only. If your phone's radio doesn't have a clear path between 
it and the potential receiver it simple won't work.

Cell phone networks work because they pay the big money to get their 
nodes up high above surrounding terrain with power and data. That's 
really only feasible for mesh networks in coastal cities with mountains 
or mega-cities where residents have access to the roofs.

Even store and forward doesn't help these "mesh" line of sight networks 
when all the antennas are a max of about 2 meters above terrain.

I wouldn't bother. Which is to say, I've already spent years and years 
playing with VHF and up IP and otherwise data networks over radio. And I 
can tell you from personal experience: that little rise in the land, or 
being in a little dip, is going to kill things. Mesh networks don't work 
without big bucks being invested.
