The real issue is operational leakage, filesystem metadata, repeated snapshots, backups, flash wear-leveling, and traces left by the host system.

VeraCrypt’s plausible deniability is conditional, not absolute.

A PlugMate duress PIN is a separate vendor feature, not cryptographic proof that all traces can be erased.

If, after being caught with a PlugMate, you offer a duress PIN instead of the password they requested, border officers will likely interpret it as a deliberate attempt to destroy or conceal evidence, not as cooperation.

A duress PIN is not proof of guilt for whatever crime is being investigated.

At most, offering or activating it may be treated as circumstantial evidence of an attempt to conceal or destroy data.

Whether that creates a separate offence depends entirely on the jurisdiction and the circumstances.
