Investigators in Chicago have launched an investigation after discovering more than 50 bodies at a local funeral home had been improperly stored in unrefrigerated, rodent-infested conditions that led to the bodies being infested themselves with maggots. According to The Associated Press, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said it had been notified that bodies at South Chicago Chapel were being improperly stored and cared for as they awaited their final resting place. When forensic pathologists and investigators were dispatched, they found uncared-for remains in various stages of decomposition. Neighbors told local media they noticed a terrible smell coming from the area around the funeral home before the authorities got involved. No arrests have been announced yet related to the case. On Wednesday, August 5, funeral director Johanna Morgan had her license temporarily suspended as a result of the ongoing investigation. Additionally, the Associated Press found that Clark X. Morgan, the funeral home's president, also had his director license suspended and was fined $10,000 back in 2024 for practicing with an expired license and "unprofessional conduct" that it did not specify. This marks the duo's second time being investigated on similar grounds. They previously ran a crematory in Chicago Heights, which had its license revoked last year after authorities discovered improperly stored bodies and hundreds of cremated remains that had not been returned to families. They are reportedly in ongoing litigation over the crematory issues that investigators found. The outlet reports that, after its findings at the funeral home, the state Department of Financial and Professional Regulation deemed their practice as "a danger to the public safety, interest and welfare" due to the conditions they were operating in and keeping human remains in. https://www.yahoo.com/news/us/articles/investigators-discover-50-bodies-s tored-090005365.html
