KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City-area police departments are sounding the 
alarm after toxicology reports showed three men had fentanyl and cocaine 
in their systems when they were found dead in the Northland last month.

The Independence Police Department said it has seen an astronomical rise 
in cases involving fentanyl while the Kansas City, Kansas, Police 
Department said the rise is steady and alarming.

Their warning is clear: Fentanyl is an urgent problem in the Kansas City 
area that must be addressed now.

“I think we have reached the crisis point with fentanyl,” Independence 
Deputy Police Chief Michelle Sumstad said. “People are dying every day.”

That statement echoes the heartbreaking reality for the families of 
Clayton McGeeney, Ricky Johnson and David Harrington.

“I’m not surprised when you look at these fentanyl cases. You can have 
several individuals using fentanyl; three could die, and one might not 
even overdose,” KCK Police Chief Karl Oakman said. “One pill can kill. 
It’s so true.”

According to multiple sources close to the investigation, Kansas City 
police detectives informed McGeeney, Johnson and Harrington’s families on 
Thursday that the toxicology report showed traces of cocaine and fentanyl 
in the their systems.

Harrington, McGeeney and Johnson went to their friend Jordan Willis’s home 
to watch the Kansas City Chiefs’ final regular season game on Jan. 7.

They were found dead two days later outside the rental home near N.W. 83rd 
Terrace and N. Overland Drive in Kansas City.

Willis has since moved out of the home, and according to Fox News, has 
checked into rehab to address his problem with addiction.

Unfortunately, police said fentanyl deaths aren’t a new problem, but 
instead it’s getting worse by the day, according to Sumstad and Oakman.

“Fentanyl is just an up and coming community problem,” Sumstad said. “It’s 
extremely concerning because, like you said, people are dying, and 
whenever anyone dies, that’s tragic. When it’s a needless death, it’s even 
more tragic.”

Oakman said to get ahead of this problem, there must be a metro-wide 
response.

“We need to have a unified approach to this. Like I said with KCK, we did 
prevention, education and enforcement, and you have to take this serious,” 
Oakman said.

Kansas City police are still investigating Harrington, McGeeney and 
Johnson’s deaths. The department has not sent the case over to the Platte 
County Prosecutor’s Office yet.
