Ok, did a little research.  Ergine, or lysergic acid amide (LSA or 
LA-111) had been isolated by Hoffman, and he self-administered the 
substance in 1947, and described some of the psychological effects (a 
500 microgram dose led to a tired, dreamy state, with an inability to 
maintain clear thoughts).  At the time of Hoffman's experiment ergine 
was unknown in nature.

Ergine is one of the more prevalent alkaloids in morning glory seed.  If 
Hoffman self-administered ergine, he probably did so with other ergot 
alkaloids.  The CIA also funded experiments for the acquisition, 
isolation and characterization of intoxicating substances found in a 
species of morning glory (Rivea corymbosa).  See:

Interestingly, the ergot compound you mention as a treatment for 
migraine has an interesting commentary by Sasha Shulgin in TIHKAL under 
the LSD chapter (#26).

"UML-491, Methysergide, Sansert. This is the synthetic homologue of 
methergine (1-methyl) and is employed clinically as a treatment for 
migraine headaches. When the usual therapeutic dosage of two milligrams 
is scaled up by a factor of ten, there is a profound LSD-like response 
described by most subjects."
