(TND) An Arizona county is suing its former treasurer for allegedly embezzling more than $39 million, it announced on Friday. Santa Cruz County accused Elizabeth Gutfahr in a lawsuit filed Thursday of stealing $39,412,000, according to a press release. The county said its goal is to recover as much of the funds as possible. Though this is a significant amount of money for our community, we will do everything in our power to avoid impact to the day-to-day operations of the entities that rely on funding from the County, and we will continue to provide straightforward updates as things progress, the press release reads. Gutfahr resigned in April, when the county became aware of 11 irregular transactions of $375,000, according to the release. Santa Cruz said in June it had immediately secured all official accounts controlled by Gutfahr before alerting the proper authorities. Investigations by the FBI, Department of Justice and local authorities are still ongoing, according to the county. The County is continuing its comprehensive internal review with the assistance of experienced outside legal and forensic accounting professionals, including a full forensic financial investigation of the accounts controlled by the County Treasurer, Santa Cruz noted. County supervisors met with a private company to review policies for treasurers and improve accountability of the office, according to the June press release. Following the meeting, Santa Cruz said it made changes to protect funds. The Board of Supervisors is doing everything in its power to safeguard the Countys financial future, assist in bringing to light any potential wrongdoing, and will take action accordingly, the June release reads. Inis Villa, a Santa Cruz resident, told News 4 Tucson that the situation is sad for the community. It seems unjust and sad on her part because she knew that money was to help us, the residents, she said. Another member of the community, Roberto Esparza, told the outlet Gutfahr should be in prison. We pay her salary, and she abused that confidence that people give these politicians around here, he argued. The politicians, I think they get way too much of a break. -- We live in a time where intelligent people are being silenced so that stupid people won't be offended.
