     Because humans, who are doing the work, require money. 
     No matter if you believe in a deity or not, the reality is, those
who are doing what they believe their God(s) want(s) need money to do
it. Utilities aren't free just because the house of worship is a house
of worship. 
     Those who built and/or maintain the building aren't doing it for
free. It's possible they will do it at a reduced cost, but not for
free. 
     But you already KNOW this, of course. You are, as almost always,
feeding your NEED to lie.
