This bug has been fixed in CVS.

Snapshots of the sources are packaged every three hours; this change
will be in the next snapshot. You can grab the snapshot at
http://snaps.php.net/.

Because I needed a working project today - I installed a previous
snapshopt of PHP-5.3 which did not have this issue. On sunday, I will
surely reinstall the problematic snapshot and provide a trace.
