Which is exacly why i got excited by this idea. I'm consulting such a project for the Italian Government now and, I tell you, we're moving mountains here to get PHP/JS work logically together. > Great for messaging/graphing direct database calls etc etc For tons of other things as well. JavaScript is very spread, but its code is quite week and browser-dependant. PHP is an easy-to-learn language and is very well spread Server-Side, PHPScript could have a good success. > Security would be an issue as most of the plug-in type situations need > to have > authority to talk directly to the hard drive. Well, there are ways and ways for disabling the things in PHP. This can be adopted. > Firewalls would be an issue for any database calls etc Database Client-Side? No idea what for. But, PHPScript and PHP on Server could also have a chance to communicate together somehow to simplify the things.
