Hi Lothar, Bjoern,

I agree with Bjoern, getting an acceptable rate is possible, but it depends on the types of projects you do and also your approach of self-marketing.

As far as I'm concerned, it is indeed possible to get an acceptable hourly rate (about 80 to 110 EUR) for PHP projects even in Germany. Bjoern is right, if you work in middle to large business or public sector projects and do some advanced tasks, i.e. do some interfacing and data interchanging from PHP to SAP R/3 and stuff, customers don't tend to let students do the work, but will hire a professional company with higher experience - and higher rates.

Also, if you can show customers they will save a lot of money with your project or with the project outcome (saving expenses in the future, so the project will still be economically positive; keyword: return on investment), they will also accept higher rates. This is a good marketing aspect especially in Germany, where the public sector seems to have ran out of money and everybody only wants to "save save save" money.

Best regards
Jan Steemann

95,-- to 120,-- EUR/hour is normal for PHP jobs - if they
go beyond guestbooks. It's a matter of self-marketing. And,
in Germany at least (I don't know how it's in other countries),
customers tend to wanting to _save money_. So $2000 USD/day may be
possible, but only for a few customers - and I hope you know
the current economic state. PHP projects from 40.000 EUR to
 > 100.000 EUR are also possible. If you go beyond guestbooks.
