I must have missed it or it was not in the set of patches I got while taking the hand on libgd.

However, 2.0.x features are frozen, only critical bug fixes will get in.

By the way, have you noticed the recent development about GD and pango in CVS? You may be interested in the layout options. Something similar using pango makes sense as well (we can rely on the pango API directly to get the font face details).
