change the size of gif file

hi
  i want produce .gif file based on gd, the file is big when i use 
gdImageGifPtr ,while   gdImagePngPtr  produce a png then convert to gif,the 
size is smaller,i dont waste too much time to the convertion ,so ,how can i 
do just use gdImageGifPtr ,thank you!
