Details - The stable branch for libgd 2.0.x as obtained with
  cvs -d :pserver:[email protected]:/repository checkout -r GD_2_0 -d libgd20 gd/libgd

does not build, support for tests/xpm is missing:

in file configure.ac:549, the following has to be added:

AC_CONFIG_FILES([ ... tests/xpm/Makefile ... ])
