Make for GD 2.0.34 and 2.0.35RC1 throws m4 error: unrecognized option: --debugfile

I am trying to compile the latest version of GD (2.0.34 & 2.0.35) on my
slackware 9.1, with ./configure --prefix=/usr.
The make command fails right away with the following:
 
cd . && /bin/sh /home/extra/src/gd-2.0.35RC1/config/missing --run autoheader
/usr/bin/m4: unrecognized option `--debugfile=autom4te.cache/traces.0t'
Try `/usr/bin/m4 --help' for more information.
autom4te: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1
autoheader: '/usr/bin/autom4te' failed with exit status: 1
make: *** [config.hin] Error 1

I updgraded m4 to its latest version, still, I get the same error. Anyone
knows why?
