Okay, with 36RC1 I get the following:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=../gd-2.0.36RC1/.libs/ ./colourhash <png>
gd-png:  fatal libpng error: Read Error: truncated data
gd-png error: setjmp returns error condition 1
unable to read PNG from 1241243704.Vfd04Ib4b2aM547359.thorium-1.png: 
error 0: Success

It doesn't look as if my code gets the control back here?
