As far as I remember that's what some linux > distributions do. That should not be necessary. If you build from source, configure with a customised prefix, e.g. --prefix=$HOME. Then, when compiling other, gd using applications, make sure that the directory containing the newer gdlib-config (in this case, $HOME/bin), comes first in PATH. That should pretty much do it.
