Submit button as image?

Hi. When you create a form with a submit image instead of a button, why does it create variables with the name of the image and "_x" and "_y" appended to the end rather than just the image name? And is there anyway to override this behaviour so that when you click on an image defined as a form submit button, you just get back a variable with the name of the image.
