SMS Cellular Text Messaging

Anyone enlighten me about sending SMS text messages via sendmail or or just php mail()?

I've been Googling, etc. and everything I've found so far, comes up with for-fee services.

I can send messages to my cellphone with sendmail but the regular email format is dumb at the 
cellphone.
