Actually, the colon is correct: http://uk.php.net/switch

You also need to enclose your string declarations correctly and add the $
before ext, e.g.
$cmd = "http://www.whois.com/?query=$nom.$ext";
or
$cmd = 'http://www.whois.com/?query='.$nom.'.'.$ext;
