Problem accessing MySQL from PHP

Hi all, I am having problems accessing MySQL, any hints would be

appreciated:

Trying to access MySQl from the command line as root or 
mysql works fine. As "nobody" it gives me the following:

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111) 

Trying to access MySQL from a PHP script gives me a similar
message:

Warning: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111) 

After trying a few things the following works from the command
line:

$ su nobody
$ mysql -h 127.0.0.1

MySQL comes up and I have access to all the databases. 

I changed from "localhost" to "127.0.0.1" in the PHP script and 
now do not get the warning but the connection still does not 
work.

Any help would be very welcome
