I go one step further. 

"A new update is available! It fixes problems $problems"; 

When they click the button, it does all the updating and then gives a "We're 
all done!", with an ok button that, when clicked, terminates the program 
cleanly for the user to restart. 

No complaints on this over a long, LONG period of time.
