Okay I RTFQuickStart
Lots of good stuff at http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/macports/wiki/UsingMacPortsQuickStart such as:

So I guess I can try Macports PHP5 instead of MAMP.
I wonder if php5-gtk will get PHP5 for me.
