I think that even though people complain about Javascript having problems,
creating a PHP applet runtime would create more problems than it would
solve.  Yeah, Javascript sucks pretty hard a large degree of the time ; but,
given the choice, I'd rather code in something I knew was supported by a
majority of the browsers out there than in something that depended on the
existence of a plugin.


That's not to say it shouldn't be done ; I just don't see it as a viable
replacement for Javascript.  If you truly need a powerful language for
client-side webapps, you can always use Java too...
