'ext/ctype/ctype.lo: unknown file type' error while install

Hello,
   I downloaded the php-4.3.9 source and I'm trying to install it on a
SPARC Solaris 9 machine.  The machine had previously installed mysql
and apache2 packages. The configure script completes fine with no
errors but the make fails with the below error. I have tried may
configurations but all result in the same error. Any help on what I'm
missing would be appreciated.
