Bob, I've had similar problems with configure trying to find the right library. 
  In my case it is having a problem finding libxml2.  I haven't come up with a 
good solution yet, but will share it here if I do.  I'd love to hear what you 
can come up with as well - hard coding works but I'm trying to avoid it to make 
upgrades easier...
