PHP installation

Dear all,
 
I'm just starting with PHP and I'd like to install it properly on my machine
in order to create the dynamic web sites. I'd need some help on how to
install PHP 4.3.9 on windows xp with apache 1.3.33. 
I've been trying to follow the instructions from install.txt file included
together with the other files in php-4.3.0-Win32.zip but there's many things
which doesn't mean anything to me.
 
could you advise me step by step how to install php 4 on my machine please.
I would really appreciate your help.
I don't know where is the PATH and where in the path should I add the C:\php
directory.
