Unable to Install PECL-FileInfo on X86_64

I am unable to install "pecl fileinfo" on a 64 bit machine. I can install it on my test box which is a 32 bit machine. My OS on both boxes is Suse Linux Enterprise Server 10 - SP1. I am running PHP 5.1.2-29.4, Apache2.2.3-16.15, and MySQL5.0.26-12.16. I am puzzled.
