And you need to be sure that it builds on VC6 and VC9.

If you know what you are doing, you can do it without duplications,
that's why the configure options are for (--with-php-build for
example, or extra lib/include). But I will still not recommend any
other layout by default, a experienced developer does not need any
default layout anywaay (but can't complain when things went mad :)
