installation of php4 and uninstallation of php3

 my php3 was installed with my linux OS.
 
 as no php3 scripts were written. can i remove the whole php3 and 
 install 
 a new php4.  
 
 also, how can i configure php4 to work with mysql?
 i heard php4 configure with mysql automatically.
