While the behaviour may seem odd, keep in mind that you don't have any incentive to mark a private method final in the first place.
This is buggy behaviour, but it's not a high-prio bug.
I've been able to confirm the bug on October 5th 2008 running PHP 5.2.5 with Suhosin-Patch 0.9.6.2 (cli) (built: Jan 14 2008 17:07:09)
