Keep in mind that PDO is a collection of underlying drivers and changing implementation of these drivers.
This should be better documentated. For example the constant MYSQL_ATTR_INIT_COMMAND isn't avaiable on my system.

That is the normal behaviour of php since there is no close-procedure for the used resources in PDO. So you need to destory all objects which are using the link resource before php can clean up/close the resource.
