Thanks, hpartidas! You timed this perfectly for me.

However, your function returns an array of:

     $output[$row_num][$col_num] = value

I have not used the official str_getcsv() function, but I was assuming that it would process only one row at a time [similar to fgetcsv()], and thus return:

     $output[$col_num] = value

Is my understanding of the official str_getcsv() incorrect, or is your function too powerful? :)
