My own personal take on PDO was that it was illconcieved from the start and I'm 
still using ADOdb happily 10+ years on. This uses the generic drivers and so 
I've never bothered with PDO's firebird driver.
The other 'improvements' being made to PHP itself are adding to the feeling that 
it has lost the plot in general and so I've now frozen my own development work 
based on PHP5.4 and will not bother with a later version now even if that 
requires continuing to maintain PHP5.4 myself at some point, but PHP5.2 is still 
stable and 'safe' if used properly and many people are still reliant on it ... 
despite the bugs. EVERYTHING is being pushed forward far too fast without 
leaving space for those of us with a vast raft of legacy code the time to bring 
it forward and PDO is an example of something started but never 'finished' :(
