Hi, I've been coding PHP since php3 and I know the difference between
php4.4 and php 5.1.6 :-)
The problem is that that information is only written on the release
notes for 1.8.0alpha1 (which of course nobody will ever look at again).
The dependencies list for the the latest release only mention php 4.4,
so causing confusion for someone with php 5.1.4 wondering why pear won't
upgrade.
Until I work out how to upload a screenshot here, I've put the current
display of http://pear.php.net/package/PEAR/download here:

Uhm, if you read that carefully...
You need either:
PHP 4.4
Or:
PHP 5.1.6
PHP 4 vs 5 = different beasts.

Description:
------------
http://pear.php.net/package/PEAR/download/All
says php 4.4.0 is the requirement, but it won't upgrade with php
5.1.4.
The reason is only hidden in the release notes for 1.8.0alpha1, where
it says "PHP 4.4 and 5.1.6 are now the minimum PHP requirements"
That information needs to be in the requirements section for all 1.8.x
versions, not just alpha1 !!
