I agree with Björn that at some point PEAR nust be split away from PHP, and I'm sure that the core PEAR developers agree with this. There's been much mention of keeping in the same model as CPAN and this splitting must therefore happen eventually. I'm sure at some point, some thought will have to go into creating a seperate distribution of PEAR and with that, a method of distribution outside the PHP tree. Perl has the luxury of being staandalone and can make use of the 'perl Makefile.PL' stuff but obviously PHP doesn't have this luxury unless everyone has a PHP CGI they can make use of. In addition, there's the whole issue of dependencies, conflicts and so on. Finally, as mentioned previously, a CPAN style installation program would be a boon to PEAR. Many people prefer it to installing modules manually and it handles depedencies, mirrors and so on. Again, the fact that many people don't use the CGI version may be a problem which no matter what installation, management system is used - will have to be addressed. Cheers, Graeme
