PHPLib and Pear merge

There was talk about 1 to 2 months back about PHPLib merging with Pear... I hadn't followed the threads after the original loud support on the PHPLib side... Now, I hear that you pear folks do NOT want the merge to take place or if it does to hack PHPLib to use pear's API. Is this true? There have also been expressed concerns about the speed of pear...
