I think I know what was my problem. By default apc.cache_by_default is
On and apc.filters is empty. Those parameters in conjunction are turning
caching off. This significantly slows PHP down. But when I set
apc.filters to "\.php$" PHP was still slower than PHP without APC.

I followed Pierre's suggestion and compiled this extension on the
"stepbystepbuild" way. I was turning on and off parameters
--enable-fileinfo, --enable-memprotect and --enable-spinlocks with no
success.

Is this a bug or I messed something up?
