BUG: Smarty 2.6.7 compiler crashes with mbstring OR t1lib

Hi again!

As a followup, it turns out Smarty 2.6.7 crashes with either of the
following:
- either
- gd with --with-t1lib-dir

I can't pinpoint the problem but those two MUST be able in order for my
pages to run correctly (all are using Smarty). By recompiling by PHP
including ANY of these it crashes (NO PHP SCRIPT MODIFICATION AT ALL). By
recompiling PHP yet again and disabling both of these make my pages run
smoothly.

I wonder why... it's a very strange problem.
