Using assign within a function

is it possible to have something like this, inside a template?

{foreach from=$Items item=Item}
    {php}
        $thumb = $product->getImageThumb();
        $smarty->assign( 'ProdThumb', $thumb );
    {/php}
    {$ProdThumb}
{/foreach}
