I would really want to know if the devels knows about this beast and
what they think about it.

I already had my hand on Zope, and DTML looks pretty cool.
Also in DIST/lib/python/DocumentTemplate all the sources are 
well documented, so a good python readed should get plenity of ideas.

Not at all. In fact, everybody complains it's too tight. There were
talking about adding <dtml-python> tag to support inline python code.
hmm, mileages?
